WANDI NZIMANDE - PROFILE
JUN 07 by ILN

Loxion Kulca is the hottest brand to be seen worn on todays streets, created back in 1997 by Sechaba Mogale and Wandi Nzimande, inspired by the urban ‘kulca' (culture) and past history of the ‘loxion' (locations/townships).

"We were young and unemployed and trying all kinds of ways to make a living," Mogale says, “that's when we met our mentor and business partner Brian Abrahams (1999) who gave our vision momentum and structure”.

The duo liked to wear funky close-fitting crocheted skullcaps that caught the attention of people on the streets, which usually resulted in an informal purchase order. Their families and friends crocheted the caps. These hats were "very special" in that their small rim could "flop outwards, droop close to the head and they accommodated big afro and dreadlock hairstyles".

The brand, initially an informal enterprise of hand-made items that started with R17-50, has grown into a corporation that reaches the entire country and neighbouring states, through various license agreements.

Mogale says they were nothing new, "we just added new colours, new combinations and unusual material" and they took off. Abrahams, who had vast experience in the clothing business saw the potential of the brand and financed the birth of Loxion Kulca as we see it today.

"We were tired of the international brands, we wanted something local that had a relevance to our "street kulca" and was comfortable to wear. In other words, "clothing with a correct fit, pockets in the right places and fabrics of "utility quality", which the wearer could "wear and keep their temperature constant while looking stylish” says Mogale.

Loxion/lock-shin/location is unique to South Africa and the term is used country wide to describe: townships, ghettos, disadvantaged, under-developed areas and in some instances it refers to "home". It represents the African urban state of mind while nurturing Kulca (culture), pride and successes of those who made freedom tangible.

Nowadays the 'loxion' is a hub of culture, history and extravagance as its residents pride themselves in overcoming the oppressive regime and flourishing in the new democratic South Africa. Through the success of the brand the, founders have been able to align the brand and themselves with youth and development projects. The projects range from entertainment, art, sport, cultural activities and entrepreneurial initiatives.

The brand was born in Johannesburg and since its entry into to the market, has been the embodiment of popular culture. It draws its inspiration of authentic African principles of 'ubuntu', which govern the nature of our corporate partnerships.
